Amazon forest fires are an urgent global environmental problem. Every year, the Amazon rainforest, often called the “lungs of the world,” experiences destructive fires. Data shows that more than 60% of fires occur due to human activities, such as clearing land for agriculture and industry. In recent years, the quantity of fires has increased significantly, indicating a greater crisis. Investigating the causes of the fires, we find that deforestation is the main driver. Illegal logging and land exploitation have converted complex forest ecosystems into agricultural land, resulting in a tremendous loss of biodiversity. The Amazon’s biodiversity, which includes more than 30% of the world’s species, is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss. With the loss of species, ecosystems become fragile, affecting the ecological balance. Fires in the Amazon also have a major impact on climate change. Carbon stored in trees and forest soil is released into the atmosphere, increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. In 2020 alone, Amazon fires accounted for around 1.5% of total global CO2 emissions. This complicates the world’s efforts to achieve the emissions reduction targets needed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The air quality around the burned area is also deeply affected. Smoke from these fires can spread to neighboring countries, causing health problems for exposed residents. Increasing cases of respiratory diseases and increasing death rates due to air pollution are increasingly becoming a concern for health organizations. The social impact of the Amazon forest fires cannot be ignored either. Indigenous communities that depend on forests for their livelihoods are threatened when their habitats are lost. Burning forests drive them from the lands they have lived in for centuries, leading to conflict with large corporations seeking to exploit the resources. Involvement of local communities in forest management can help mitigate fires and protect biodiversity. In efforts to deal with this problem, various international organizations and governments have an important role. International agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, emphasize the importance of forest protection. However, the implementation of stricter policies and effective supervision is still needed to overcome the causes of fires. Technology-based approaches, such as satellite monitoring, can help in detecting fires as early as possible. Cooperation between Amazon countries in law enforcement and resource management could be an effective solution to slowing the rate of fires. Confronting the threat of Amazon forest fires requires collective action from around the world. Greater awareness of the importance of protecting forests and reducing human impacts is key to maintaining ecosystem balance and protecting our planet. Local initiatives, international support and community engagement are integral parts of a sustainable solution to this problem. By increasing conservation efforts and environmental education, we can contribute to the restoration and protection of the Amazon forest for future generations.
